The Friends of the Allen County Public Library will present the next Lincoln at the Library Lecture on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at 2:00 pm. in Meeting Room A at the Main Library.

On the afternoon of August 28, 1862 the farm of John C. Brawner shimmered in the summer heat, family members oblivious to the war being fought in Northern Virginia.  At sunset the Brawner fields became caught between two contending armies, a hotly contested battle transforming this idyllic landscape into a roaring hell.  After a contest that began at sunset and lasted but ninety minutes, the fighting was over.  Casualties were incredibly high–about forty percent in the federal force and even higher in the rebel army,with at least two grayclad regiments losing more than seventy percent of their strength.

In his presentation Brave Men’s Tears, Civil War historian Al Gaff will examine the August 28, 1862, battle on John Brawner’s northern Virginia farm from a variety of perspectives, including strategy, tactics, and some of the important personalities.
